How has COVID-19 affected the Home Improvement Industry
In 2020, the home is just about where everything makes up a typical consumer’s life. As COVID-19 has forced nearly everyone to spend more time at home, there’s no doubt the collective shelter-in-place experience will have a long-term impact on consumer psychology. Taking into consideration the current state of the industry, spending in the $900 billion home improvement sector will likely continue to increase. Over the next three years, its growth rate could even start to exceed that of new home construction.
As of now, consumer interest is in remodeling, and homeowners have been backing up that interest with elevated spending at places like Home Depot and Lowe’s, as well as with the hiring of contractors to do professional renovations. But whether that enthusiasm will persist through what could be an extended U.S. economic downturn remains to be seen.
